On January 6, in our capital, a group of Americans attacked our democratic process, at the behest of the president of the United States. This was a direct assault on the institutions that ensure our freedom. I’m horrified and embarrassed, for our nation and for its children.
The events come at the end of an extended period of pain that has driven Americans apart in so many ways. In our schools, there is much work to be done to repair deep wounds to families, to restore basic respect for facts and for knowledge, and to ensure understanding of our democratic institutions. Teachers need our help like never before. Great Minds will remain steadfast and grow only more essential to the process of reuniting our nation, educating its children, championing equity, and restoring America’s place as a defender and promoter of human freedom.
